Six sessions, written up in full

Six artists wrote the accounts below and each is printed whole, alongside the service it concerns and the day it was written. Together they cover tracking, overdubs, mixing, mastering, a live-room day and a tape transfer.

I sent four mixes on a Monday and had the masters back on the Friday, which is the five working days the website promises and not a day longer. The first pass was louder than I wanted and I said so in one sentence; the revision came back the next afternoon without a lecture about streaming targets. The figure on the invoice was the figure on the Services page, per song, and nothing else was added to it.

I booked a single tracking day to record six acoustic songs and was set up and hearing myself in the headphones inside forty minutes. The engineer tried two microphones on the guitar before the first take and played me both rather than choosing silently. Setup came out of the eight hours exactly as the page said. I left at six with every file on my own drive and a written list of which take was which.

What the website said about the overdub block was what happened. Four hours, one singer, one microphone chain picked for my voice before I sang a note. I asked why that microphone and got a straight answer instead of a shrug. The comped vocal was in my inbox by nine that evening, the price was the price printed beside the description, and nothing was added for the extra harmony I tried at the end.

I wrote to ask about eleven reels of quarter-inch tape that had sat in a garage for thirty years and had a written answer the same afternoon, with the amount spelled out and what it did and did not cover. Nothing was started until I agreed in writing, and I was told plainly that two of the reels might not survive being played. One did not. The other ten are now files I can actually listen to.

I sat in for the mix of one song and was never made to feel I was in the way. Every change was played to me before it stayed, and when I asked for the vocal up and then back down again that simply happened. The quote had been confirmed in writing once the files were seen, and the invoice matched it. I left with the main mix, an instrumental and a vocal-up version, as the page said I would.

I play in a five-piece and I ask tedious questions about drum microphones. I got real answers here: which microphones, where they would sit, and why the room did not need much added afterwards. Everybody played together in the live room and the headphone mixes were sorted before midday. The figure was confirmed in writing before the date was held, and it was the figure on the invoice.
