A shop that says the price out loud

Thistle & Tail Pet Supply is a single-room, independent pet supply shop at 118 Larkin Street in Bellingham, Washington. It has sold food, bedding, harnesses, toys and aquarium and terrarium equipment from the same room since 2016, with the price written on the shelf and the scope of every service written down.

Marisol Trent opened the shop in 2016, in a unit on Larkin Street that had spent years as a carpet showroom. Before that she spent eleven years buying for a feed supplier two counties over, where she watched customers sold the wrong thing again and again because the wrong thing carried the better margin. The argument the shop was built on follows from that: a small floor with a written price on everything beats a large floor with a sale sign on everything.

So the floor stayed small and the prices stayed printed. Six services sit alongside the shelves, each with a published price, a published length and a written scope, and five of the six credit their fee in full against whatever the customer buys that day. Nothing is added at the counter and no package is assembled on a customer’s behalf. A customer who is told that a product will not help is told it before the money changes hands rather than after.

Three principles

  • The price is on the shelf

Every bag, tank, harness and toy carries its price where it stands, and so does every service. There is no price-matching and no sale sign, because the shop would rather explain why a bag costs what it costs than pretend to beat a warehouse.

  • The scope is written down

Each of the six services states how long it takes, what it covers and what the customer leaves holding — a mixing schedule, a water card, a parts list with a total on it. A question that falls outside that scope is named as outside it rather than guessed at.

  • The shop will tell a customer not to buy something

Staff say when a product is wrong for an animal, when an enclosure is too small for the species going into it, and when the money would be better spent at a vet. A sale lost that way costs less than a customer who stops trusting the answer.

What a visit looks like

  1. Step 1

    The animal is asked about

Species, age, what it eats now and what has gone wrong, before anything comes off a shelf.

  2. Step 2

    The scope is confirmed

One of the six services, or a plain statement that none of them fits and that nothing needs buying today.

  3. Step 3

The price is said out loud

Before the appointment starts, including the fee that is credited back against a purchase made the same day.

  4. Step 4

The customer leaves with it in writing

A mixing schedule, a water card or a parts list with a total — theirs to keep, and theirs to take elsewhere.

What this shop does not do

Thistle & Tail Pet Supply does not sell cats, dogs, puppies or kittens, and never has; the only livestock on the floor is freshwater fish, feeder insects and a small number of captive-bred reptiles from two local breeders, both named on request. It is not a veterinary practice, and nobody on the floor diagnoses, treats or medicates an animal. It does not wash, trim or board animals either. Where a customer needs one of those things, staff say so plainly and name somewhere else that does it. And it will not stock a food whose manufacturer refuses to name the plant it is made in.

A question about a food, a tank or a price

The contact form takes a question about a bag, a tank or a price and sends it to the shop. Book goes to the arrangements page; neither one confirms a time by itself.
