A pet shop that says the price out loud

Thistle & Tail Pet Supply puts a written price on everything on the shelf, publishes what each of its six services covers and how long it takes, and says plainly when a product is not the right one.

An aisle in a small pet supply shop, with stacked clear treat dispensers on one side and bagged dog food on the shelving opposite.
The aisle photographed from the door: the treat dispensers on one side, the bagged food opposite.

Three of the six

Every service has a written scope, a published price and a set length, and on five of the six the fee comes straight off a purchase made the same day. The three below are the ones most first visits start with; the full six are on the services page.

  • Food transition plan

Forty minutes and a written day-by-day schedule for moving an animal onto a new food.

    fee $35

  • Harness and collar fitting

Twenty-five minutes of measuring and fitting on the animal, across the sizes the shop stocks.

    fee $20

  • Aquarium water testing

A twenty-minute bench test of a water sample, with every reading written on a card.

    fee $15

How Thistle & Tail Pet Supply works

The price is on the shelf, the scope of each service is written down before it starts, and on five of the six the fee is credited in full against whatever is bought that day. Staff will say when a bag, a tank or a supplement is the wrong thing to buy, and will name a vet or an aquatic specialist when the honest answer is not a product at all. The shop does not sell cats or dogs and has never done so.

The shop floor

Three photographs from inside the shop. The captions say what each one shows, and none of them claims to be work completed by Thistle & Tail Pet Supply.

  • Stacked gravity dispensers of loose dog biscuits, each bin hand-labelled along its lip.
The bulk treat bar at the front of the shop, photographed along the run of dispensers.
  • Shop shelving holding rock hides, boxed mini terrariums and cartons of live crickets.
The terrarium wall, with hides, boxed enclosures and cricket cartons on slatted shelving.
  • A saltwater display aquarium with live rock and a small mandarin goby.
The saltwater display tank beside the counter, photographed with the lights at full.

The people who do the work

Four people run the shop between them, and two of them are below. A visitor may ask for a particular one through the contact form, and every appointment has a named person attached to it.

  • A very young puppy asleep in an open palm.

    Marisol Trent

    Owner and buyer

Opened the shop in 2016, after eleven years buying for a farm and feed supplier two counties over. Chooses everything on the shelves and will not stock a food whose manufacturer refuses to say where it is made. The photograph above is not of her.

  • A small brown cloth toy dog photographed against a plain white ground.

    Devan Okoye

    Nutrition lead

Runs the food transition plans and the starter builds, after six years on the floor of a veterinary practice dispensary. He is the person who will tell a customer that the expensive bag is not better for their animal. The photograph above is not of him.

What customers have said

  • Devan spent forty minutes on a transition plan for a dog who had been sick on three different foods, wrote the whole fortnight out on a sheet, and then took the $35 straight off the bag. The dog has been fine since.

    Hannah V., Bellingham

  • The harness fitting is the reason I stopped buying harnesses online. Four sizes tried on the actual dog, twenty minutes, and the fee came off the one that fitted.

    Terrence O., Ferndale

  • Priya tested a water sample, told me my nitrate was fine and that the problem was the light being on eleven hours a day, and sold me nothing. I have bought everything for that tank there since.

Four questions, answered plainly

Does the shop sell puppies or kittens?

No. It has never sold cats or dogs and does not intend to. The livestock on the floor is freshwater fish, feeder insects and captive-bred reptiles from two local breeders, both named on request.

Are the consultation fees really credited back?

Yes, in full, against a purchase made the same day, on all five of the paid services that say so. The treat bar is priced by weight and has no fee to credit.

Can staff tell a customer what is wrong with an animal?

No. Nobody on the floor is a veterinarian and nobody will guess. Staff will say when something needs a vet, and would rather say it early.

Does the shop price-match?

No. The prices on the shelf are the prices, and the shop would rather explain why a bag costs what it costs than pretend to beat a warehouse.

A question about a food, a tank or a price

The contact form takes a question about a bag, a tank or a price and sends it to the shop. Book goes to the arrangements page; neither one confirms a time by itself.

Occasional notes from the shop
