Behind the tables

The groomers and what each one is asked for

Four people run Bramble & Paw Pet Grooming between them. Each one takes every service on the board, and each one has two the salon sends their way first. The photograph beside each groomer is a working one, taken in the bath or on the table, and a message can ask for any of them by name.

The groomer records

A German shepherd lathered on a steel bath table while a tattooed hand works shampoo into its coat with an orange brush.

No. 01

Maren Holloway

Owner and lead groomer

Maren Holloway opened Bramble & Paw Pet Grooming and still takes the first table on every day the salon is open, working the wire coats that have to come out by hand rather than under a blade. They will say at the first appointment whether a coat that has been clipped for years is going to strip cleanly, and they will say it before the two and a half hours start rather than halfway through them.

Responsible for the finish the other three tables work to.

An apricot standard poodle standing on a grooming table in a freshly scissored trim, clippings on the table beside it.

No. 02

Theo Parrish

Senior groomer

Theo Parrish takes the long clip and scissor work and the first appointments puppies come in for, which are the two ends of the board and want the same thing from a groomer: time that is not being counted. A puppy that has had enough of the dryer is finished another day at no extra cost, and a full groom is worked to what the coat does between visits rather than to a photograph.

Responsible for every first visit a puppy has in this salon.

A freshly groomed curly-coated dog sitting out on the pavement after its appointment.

No. 03

June Okafor

Groomer and consultation lead

June Okafor reads the messages that arrive through the contact form and writes most of the replies, which is why a message describing the breed, how the coat is kept now and when it was last done comes back with a service and a price against it. If the service being asked for is the wrong one for that coat, the reply says so and names the one that fits.

Responsible for what the salon promises before a dog arrives.

A white American Eskimo dog standing on a grooming table with its coat brushed out.

No. 04

Callie Brandt

Salon coordinator

Callie Brandt keeps the diary, answers the telephone and makes certain that every appointment has the right amount of time behind it, which is the reason one table at a time is a fact here rather than a phrase. A coat that is going to need two hours is not written into an hour because an hour is what was free.

Responsible for the timing of the day and for the book itself.

Talk to the salon

Ask for a groomer by specialty

Naming a groomer in a message is enough. If they are not working the day being asked about, the reply says which days they are.

The column

A short note when the salon changes something

Holiday hours, a groomer joining or leaving, a price that moves. Two or three notes a year and nothing else.
