Cut and finish

A consultation about how the hair is worn on an ordinary morning comes first, then a wash at the basin and a scissor cut worked to the growth pattern rather than to a photograph. The shape is checked dry at the end, so the line that leaves the salon is the line that appears the next morning and not one held together by product.

What the appointment includes

Worth knowing:The price covers the cut, the wash and the finish. Colour of any kind is a separate service and is priced separately.

About 60 minutes Best for hair that needs a shape kept through the length and a line that has to hold for six to eight weeks.

Colour and cut

Price: $150

Colour and cut

A full colour and a cut worked in one sitting by the same stylist, which is the only way the two are ever matched to each other. The shade is chosen by the window in daylight rather than under the mirror lights, and the formula used is written down at the first visit so the same colour can be repeated exactly on the next one.

What the appointment includes

  • A patch test booked at least 48 hours before the day
  • A full colour and a cut in the same sitting
  • The formula written down for next time

Worth knowing:A patch test is required before any colour service, including this one. It takes five minutes at the salon and there is no charge for it.

About two and a half hours Best for a colour change and a cut wanted as one sitting rather than as two separate visits.

Between colours

Price: $45

Gloss and toner

A gloss or a toner is worked through the mid-lengths and ends to put tone back into colour that has gone brassy or flat, then rinsed and dried. The shade is matched against the hair by the window before anything is mixed, and it is quoted before it is mixed as well.

  • A gloss or toner through the mid-lengths and ends
  • Tone matched by the window in daylight
  • A blow-dry finish

Worth knowing:This refreshes tone on hair that has already been coloured. It cannot lift a level and it will not cover grey on its own.

About 30 minutes Best for colour that has gone brassy or flat three or four weeks after it was done.

Shears, drawn. Blade length decides how a line sits, which is why there is more than one pair within reach of every chair.

The long appointment

Price: $195

Balayage

Lightening is hand-painted through the lengths so the colour starts soft at the root and there is no hard line to grow out. A toner sets the finished shade, and the cut is worked into the new shape afterwards rather than before it. It is booked as one long appointment with nobody waiting on the chair.

Worth knowing:It is a single booking of a little over three hours and cannot be split across two visits at this price. The price moves with the length and the density of the hair, which is why it is quoted after the consultation.

About three and a quarter hours Best for grown-out colour that should keep growing out without a hard line at the root.

Root to tip

Price: $95

Single-process colour

One shade is worked from root to tip in a single application, which is what covers grey evenly at the parting and the hairline. The shade is matched in daylight, the timing is set to the hair rather than to the tube, and the finish is a blow-dry. The price moves with the length, so it is quoted before anything is mixed.

What the appointment includes

  • One shade worked from root to tip
  • Roots covered at the parting and the hairline
  • A blow-dry finish

Worth knowing:The price covers colour only. A cut in the same visit is the colour and cut at $150, which is less than booking the two apart.

About 90 minutes Best for covering grey, or for one even shade from root to tip with nothing painted through it.

Finishing only

Price: $42

Blow-dry and set

A wash and a scalp massage at the basin, then a blow-dry worked section by section rather than pushed around with the nozzle, and a set with tongs or rollers if one is asked for. Nothing is cut and nothing is coloured, so it is the short appointment on the board and the one that is easiest to fit in.

Worth knowing:No cutting and no colour are carried out in this appointment.

About 40 minutes Best for an occasion, or for anyone who wants the finish without the cut that usually comes before it.

A folded towel, drawn. It comes off the warmer and goes round the shoulders at the basin, on every service that starts with a wash.

Before the chair

How getting in touch works, in three steps

  1. Describe the hair

    A message says how the hair is worn now, roughly when it was last cut and which service looks closest. A photograph is welcome and never required.

  2. Read the reply

    A stylist answers by email or telephone during opening hours, names the service that fits, states the price and says how long the appointment needs.

  3. Agree a time

    The time is fixed in that reply, or through the Book action if a slot is being chosen directly. Nothing earlier in the sequence holds a chair.

When a service is not the right one

A stylist who can see the hair in front of them will say when a chosen service is the wrong fit and name the one that is, before starting. That happens at the chair and it happens in the reply to a message. Nothing gets started on a service that will not work, and nothing gets charged for a service that was not carried out.

Wilder & Ash Hair Salon does not offer chemical straightening, permanent waving, hair extensions or hair replacement, and does not carry out any treatment that belongs with a medical practitioner.
