Clients on the work, in their own words

Each note below names the service it refers to and the day it was written, so it can be read against the thing it describes. The pictures beside them are of the salon and the work, not of the people who wrote the notes.

Cut and finish

No. 01

“The consultation was the whole difference. I was asked how much time I actually spend on my hair in the morning, which nobody in twenty years had thought to ask, and the cut was built around that answer instead of around a picture on a phone. It was finished dry as well, so the shape I walked out with on the Friday was still there on the Monday without me doing anything clever to it.”

Salon detail: jars of semi-permanent hair colour on a salon shelf.

Single-process colour

No. 02

“The colour was matched against my hair by the window in daylight rather than under the mirror lights, and the difference showed the moment I stepped outside. The timing was set to how my hair was actually taking it instead of to the clock on the wall, and the grey at my parting is properly covered. Four weeks on it has grown out without a line.”

Salon detail: styling chairs and round mirrors along a bright salon floor.

Gloss and toner

No. 03

“The price on the site was the price on the receipt. The toner was quoted before it was mixed and nothing appeared at the counter that had not already been said at the chair, which sounds like a low bar until you have been caught out by it somewhere else. The shade went into the book as well, so the second visit took about four words to explain and came out identical.”

Colour and cut

No. 04

“I booked the long appointment because the colour and the cut had never matched when I had them done on separate days by separate people. Here they were worked in one sitting by one stylist, the colour finished first and the shape cut into it afterwards rather than guessed at, and for once the two read as a single decision instead of two unrelated ones.”

Salon detail: a stylist cutting a client's hair at a station.

Balayage

No. 05

“I wanted to stop having a hard line at my roots every six weeks and that is exactly what I got. The lightening was painted in by hand so it starts soft at the top, the toner was mixed after the consultation rather than before it, and the cut came last and was worked into the new shape. Three months on it is still growing out with nothing to hide.”

Blow-dry and set

No. 06

“I went in for the short appointment expecting ten rushed minutes on the end of somebody elses lunch break. The wash and the scalp massage came first, the blow-dry was worked section by section instead of pushed around with the nozzle, and the whole forty minutes turned out calmer than the full haircut a fortnight before it. It is the cheapest thing on the board and it is not treated that way.”
