Scissor led

Price: $42

Signature cut

A consultation about how the hair is worn on an ordinary morning comes first, then a scissor and clipper cut worked to the growth pattern rather than to a photograph. The shape is cut dry at the end, so the line that leaves the shop is the line that appears the next morning and not one held together by product.

What the appointment includes

  • A consultation before anything is cut
  • Scissor and clipper work, finished dry
  • Neck and outline cleaned at the finish

Worth knowing: No colour, chemical straightening or perming is carried out — the shop does cutting, beard work and finishing only.

About 45 minutes Best for hair that needs shape kept through the top and a line that has to hold for four to six weeks.

Clipper led

Price: $34

Clipper cut

A clipper-led cut through the back and sides with the top blended by hand, kept to one uniform length or graduated into a shorter taper, whichever the enquiry asks for. The guard numbers used are written down at the first visit, so the same cut can be repeated exactly on the next one without describing it again.

Worth knowing: Beard work is not included here — that is the beard shape at $24, or the cut and beard at $58.

About 30 minutes Best for short hair cut on a regular cycle that should come out the same every visit.

Razor finish

Price: $24

Beard shape

The beard is shortened to the length asked for, then squared to the jaw with the cheek and neck lines set by eye against the face rather than to a fixed height off the collar. The moustache is trimmed clear of the lip last. A hot towel opens the skin before the razor touches the outline.

Worth knowing: This is not a shave: the shop shapes a beard and does not take it down to the skin.

About 30 minutes Best for a beard that has grown past its outline and needs the jaw line found again.

Shears, drawn. Blade length decides how a line sits, which is why there is more than one pair within reach of every chair.

The long appointment

Price: $58

Cut and beard

The signature cut and a full beard shape worked in one sitting by the same barber, which is the only way the two ever read as one shape. The hair is finished first and the jaw line is then set against it, rather than guessed at on a separate day. It is booked as one longer appointment with nobody waiting on the chair.

  • The full signature cut
  • A full beard shape with a razor outline
  • A hot towel between the two
  • Both checked together in the mirror

Worth knowing: It is a single ninety-minute booking and cannot be split across two visits at this price.

About 90 minutes Best for anyone whose hair and beard have never quite matched when they were cut on separate days.

Between cuts

Price: $18

Hot-towel finish

A hot towel, a clean-up of the neck and the outline, and a light dressing worked through by hand. It is taken on the end of a cut, or booked on its own around the third week, when the shape is still good but the edges have started to blur and a full appointment is not yet worth the money.

What the appointment includes

Worth knowing: It tidies an existing cut and does not re-cut the shape — if the length has gone, the service wanted is a cut.

About 15 minutes Best for the week before a cut is due, or for sharp edges before one particular occasion.

Under twelve

Price: $28

Young guest cut

A shorter appointment for a guest under twelve, worked at whatever pace the child sets, with a parent or carer beside the chair for the whole of it. The barber names each tool before it is switched on. If the appointment has to stop early then it stops, and the price drops to what was actually done.

What the appointment includes

  • A parent or carer stays beside the chair
  • Each tool named before it is used
  • The cut worked at the child's pace

Worth knowing: No razor work is carried out on a guest under twelve.

About 25 minutes Best for a first haircut, or for a child who has found a busy shop difficult before.

A folded towel, drawn. It comes out of the cabinet hot and goes on before a razor touches an outline, on every service that ends with one.

Before the chair

How getting in touch works, in three steps

  1. Describe the hair

    A message says how the hair is worn now, roughly when it was last cut and which service looks closest. A photograph is welcome and never required.

  2. Read the reply

    A barber answers by email or telephone during opening hours, names the service that fits, states the price and says how long the appointment needs.

  3. Agree a time

    The time is fixed in that reply, or through the Book action if a slot is being chosen directly. Nothing earlier in the sequence holds a chair.

When a service is not the right one

A barber who can see the hair in front of them will say when a chosen service is the wrong fit and name the one that is, before starting. That happens at the chair and it happens in the reply to a message. Nothing gets started on a service that will not work, and nothing gets charged for a service that was not carried out.

Sable & Fourth Barbers does not offer colour, chemical straightening, perming or hair replacement, and does not carry out any treatment that belongs with a medical practitioner.
