Consultation and hair assessment
no charge
Twenty minutes with the stylist who would do the work. Hair is looked at dry and then damp, condition and growth patterns are noted, and any colour already in the hair is identified before anything is recommended. The conversation ends with a written note of the service, the time it needs and the price it would be booked at.
Suits Anyone changing length or colour for the first time, and anyone who wants a firm price before committing to a longer appointment.

Blow-dry and set
from $46
A wash at the backwash basin, a scalp massage while the conditioner works, and a blow-dry shaped to the cut that is already there. A round brush finish, a flat finish or a soft set with tongs all fit inside the time. Very long or very thick hair is quoted at the consultation because it needs longer under the dryer.
Suits Anyone who wants the cut they already have finished properly, before an event or at the end of a working week.

Gloss and toner

A demi-permanent gloss applied through washed hair to correct tone, cover the first grey or return shine to colour that has faded. Nothing here lifts the natural depth, so the result sits at or just below the existing level and fades gradually over four to six weeks rather than leaving a line.
Suits Anyone between colour appointments, and anyone who wants warmth or brassiness taken down without a full colour service.

Cut and finish
from $72
A full hour: consultation, wash, cut and a finish that shows how the shape will fall at home. The cut is worked dry first so the natural fall and any cowlicks are visible, then refined wet, then checked dry again. A fringe trim within six weeks of the appointment costs nothing.
Suits Anyone changing shape or length, and anyone whose current cut has grown past the point where a blow-dry can rescue it.

Single-process colour
from $110
One colour applied from root to end, or a root application on a colour already in place, followed by a wash, a bonding treatment and a blow-dry. A strand test is taken at the consultation whenever box colour, henna or a previous lightener is in the hair, and the price is confirmed before the first section is parted.
Suits Anyone covering grey, going one or two levels darker, or keeping an established colour looking even.

Balayage and hand-painted colour
from $215
Colour painted by hand, section by section, so the lightening follows the way the hair falls instead of a fixed line. Three hours covers the painting, the development time and a toner chosen at the basin. A cut on the same day is booked as a separate service and the two appointments are placed back to back.
Suits Anyone who wants a grown-out line to stay soft, and anyone returning every three to four months rather than every six weeks.

Consultation

Booking
The appointment is held for the time the service genuinely takes, including development and toning where colour is involved. A strand test is arranged first whenever one is needed.

Appointment and aftercare
The service runs to the time set aside, and the finish is shown as it would be repeated at home. Written product notes go home with every colour service, and a fringe trim within six weeks of a cut costs nothing.
When another salon is the better answer
Fernway & Slate does not lighten hair that a strand test shows will not hold, does not book a colour correction without seeing the hair first, and does not promise a result the hair cannot reach in a single appointment. A salon that says yes to everything is not being generous; it is being careless.
